News Update: April 2012 Updates

Happy April Everyone!

I know, I know... I haven't written a post since February. But in my defence University has been kicking my behind in the last few weeks and even though I have not finished all my work (yet) I feel it is time to write another entry and hide away from it for a while!

A lot has happened since February. We have played a couple of amazing shows. Starting with the gig at Yates, Harlow with Beyond The Sacrifice, who played such an awesome show and despite being only their second gig, have come a hell of a long way since their first gig at the Portland Arms. If you haven't heard them yet I would strongly recommend checking them out here: http://www.facebook.com/BeyondtheSacrifice

As for AnarKaos, well we have been hard at work writing new material, planning our recording and organising future gigs. Our next confirmed show is at the Green Room, Doctor's Tonic, Welwyn Garden City on the 11th May. We may also be playing another show in Harlow soon, so watch this space! We have written a few great songs lately and are working hard to finalise them for upcoming shows. We really hope you guys enjoy them as much as we have enjoyed writing them.

A bit of promotion now - Encryptaeon are playing a show on the 14th April at the The Grinning Rat, Ipswich. Make sure you get over there to see them, as from interviewing them and having the privilege to be present at one of their rehearsals recently they are going to be one tough industrial metal act to follow: http://www.facebook.com/Encryptaeon

That's pretty much all I have to say at the moment. Just want to say a big thanks to AnarKaos, Fallen Apollo, Encryptaeon, Judgemetal, Beyond The Sacrifice and Replicant for letting my harass them during their rehearsal time to be interviewed for my University Research Document. On the plus side - THIS IS ALMOST FINISHED!!

Review: Cannibal Panda perform Mozart's "Dies Irae" in D Minor

In the last few weeks Cannibal Panda (the University project I am part of) have been working on a contemporary version of Mozart's "Dies Irae" for our first performance assessment. Well, yesterday on the 30th November 2011, was the performance!

Our version included the original piano score with other classical instrumentation such as saxophone and flute. This mixed in with a metal drum beat, overdriven guitar and rap and Latin vocals was reminiscent of Anthrax and Public Enemy, but with a classical twist.

The original structure was honoured as much as possible, with an added introduction and extended verse sections to fit the popular music form.

Any comments and thoughts on this adaptation are greatly appreciated as we continue to develop this project! To finish with, here is the video footage:

General Update: AnarKaos, ALC etc.

Hi everyone!

I know it has been quite a while since my last post. The truth is, I have been completely swamped with the return to University and as we are approaching the end of term, obviously the assessment deadlines are getting closer!

Let's start with some AnarKaos updates. A couple of weeks ago we headlined the Hertford Corn Exchange. Also playing were Killerstance and a couple of other bands. Killerstance were amazing, finishing their set with a cover of Machine Head's "Imperium" which was well received. Although a lot of people had left by the time we managed to come on (past 10pm), the people who were left got really involved, dancing and moshing and singing along so we would like to say a big thanks to the AnarGeeks that stayed to support us! I do have a couple of video clips from this gig so hang tight and when I get home I will be sure to post these up! A few pictures can be found here: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150340542922035.342492.644462034&type=3

Last night we also played for a friend's birthday bash which was started with several acoustic acts doing covers of popular songs. We didn't play an acoustic set however and I think drove most of the older generation outside for a smoke. The metal-heads stayed, head-banging at the front though so I think they enjoyed it! No pictures or anything for this as yet - but if anyone has any that we could post up we'd really appreciate it!

In other news - we are also looking for a manager to take care of booking gigs, negotiating money and sorting out promotion. We are happy to negotiate a percentage with any suitable person who must be committed, dedicated and as keen as we are to move forward with the band. Please get in touch if you know anyone or if you would be up for doing this yourself at: anarkaos@hotmail.co.uk

Moving on - A Lost Conspiracy are still looking for a vocalist and guitarist to get on board. At the moment though we are not doing a lot of rehearsing as our bassist, Dave Dale, currently has an injured arm and is advised not to be playing for a while. We wish him well and look forward to his return where we can carry on rehearsing and getting some kind of demo out to you guys!

I have just found out also that Shatter Your Illusions are headlining the Hertford Corn Exchange on the 8th December 2011 - so support the local music scene and get down there! Event details can be found at: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=191106974306708

Well I think that pretty much sums up everything at the moment. Sorry for the lack of posting! Have a good Sunday evening :).

Media: Cannibal Panda + Others, Tindersticks Project [Video]

For the last week, four the members from our University Band, Cannibal Panda, plus other students from the University of Northampton were involved in a project at the Royal Derngate Theatre. For five days we worked with singer/songwriter Chris T-T to develop music for pieces of film by French director Claire Denis.

The performance was held in the Underground area of the Theatre, open to many people waiting for their shows on Tuesday 25th October 2011 in support of the Tindersticks and their live performance of the same film works. Below is the video from this event and I hope you enjoy it!

News: Gaz & CJ Restart Acoustic Duo!

Hey everyone :)

Just wanted to let you all know about an exciting, new (but also a year and a half old) music project that myself and Colin Jennings have re-ignited today.

In February 2010 we set about starting an acoustic project and half-wrote our first song. Today, on the 15th October 2011 (yes a long time later...) we have actually continued where we left off and added another song to the collection with the intention of keeping this project going. I am currently playing acoustic guitar, Colin will hopefully be playing acoustic bass - but current his electric will suffice and we are both taking up vocals. We are however looking to recruit a percussionist, not really a full drum kit setup, more like bongos, congas, tambourines and other percussive instruments - if you are interested or know anyone that might be please let either of us know!

Currently the style of the project is difficult to pinpoint. We are really just coming up with ideas and songs that we can use for our acoustic project and the results so far have been promising.

So keep an eye out for any song releases or gigs that we might be playing and we look forward to demonstrating our project when we are ready!

Review: AnarKaos, Black Despair

AnarKaos, Black Despair: Camden Purple Turtle

Unfortunately, Pariah had to pull out of this gig. But this gave us time to re-enter Insight into our set list. We came on stage at 8:45pm as planned. Although the venue was quiet, Black Despair and their friends and fans came in half way through encouraging us to better the performance. The set was well received as we played our 8 song set which was:

- Cry For An Answer
- Dragon's Fate
- Burning Morality
- Never It Ends
- Insight
- F4LL3N
- I Am
- Destructive World

The only real failure in our set was the introduction to Insight. However, we moved past this and the rest of the night was amazing, especially when Black Despair took the stage. A tight band with an awesome guitarist (who had to be as they only had the one guitarist), they played some really great, exhilarating metal that left the audience really impressed.

Above is the video footage from the show. Unfortunately there are only 3 and a half songs worth of video as we ran out of memory! Pictures will follow!

Thank you to all of those that came out and we hope to see you at the next one. Keep checking the blog for updates!

News: Knockturn Alley Call It A Day...

I am very sad to announce that as of the 13th September 2011 one of my favourite bands, who are also some of my very good friends, have decided to split up.

Knockturn Alley, for those of you who have never heard of them, were a metal band from Malta, writing and performing music that to me was up there with the likes of Lamb Of God, Divine Heresey, Between The Buried And Me and Unearth. Their E.P. titled "The Dream Is Dead" was brilliant, combining brutally toned guitars, rhythmic drums and a combination of singing and screaming vocals. But the E.P. was only a shadow of what they were to become and in 2009 self-released their first album "Medusa". After removing the singing from their music, Clint's scream had developed into a mid-range roar, the technicality of the guitar riffs went up a level and there was a new higher-developed musicianship that brought the band closer together as a metal machine.

However, due to the various line up changes, musical differences and their latest drummer leaving, Knockturn Alley have decided now is the best time to end their legacy.

I would like to personally wish the best of luck to all the guys in the band and just wanted them to know that they were an inspiration to me and my own musical projects and they will continue to inspire me as people.

You can read the post on their website here: http://knockturnalleyband.com/

Help Needed For Creative Project!

OK! So, I am currently working on my third year creative project for the University of Northampton. My project is about creating seven scales from seven formulae that could potentially have sound characteristics associated to them. Once I have all seven scales (or modes, seeing as they are more closely related to modes than scales) I will compose each song in a way that represents these laws. What do I need from you guys? I would like recommendations or suggestions on different formulae that you think would be appropriate for this project. From all the available suggestions I will pick the seven that closely resemble my purpose! Please use the comments box attached to my blog to put forward your suggestion (along with what sound-characteristics are associated to it) or post a comment in response to my Facebook post. Many thanks to everyone that helps me with this!

As a token of my appreciation, every person that puts forward a suitable formula (it must have some kind of sound-associations with it) will get a copy of the finished project.
